Since this could affect air fares and travel (probably won't) I thought it relevant to post. We have always traveled AA since they are pretty much the only airline that flies there (American airline, that is (no pun intended)). So if you're wanting more info before buying a plane ticket for our trip this summer, check out this link. Partnering with GCF in Curacao

All Potential Curacao Peeps,

I think last year was our best mission trip to Curacao yet. I've taken 5 groups and every trip has been very good. But we're getting a momentum and level of trust that we've never experienced there.

Our church (Grace Christian Fellowship) will be going back for our 5th time in 5 years. I felt like last year we weren't just really blessed. I felt like we really contributed to the overall impact of the trip. Certainly more than ever before. So...

We're already talking details with our potential people about going back to Curacao next summer. We're committed to going the first week of July (week of the 4th). We also have folks going down the week before and there is the potential for ministry that week if you prefer.

If I go (and that depends on how many of you decide to go + our youth), my focus will be on non-VBS projects plus coordination with non-Grace Christian Fellowship groups. My plan is to go if really needed, basically. Oh, and 2 of my daughters are returning so I have extra incentive to return as well.

I'm planning a group Skype session soon to talk about the upcoming trip. I may just create a video but I'd like it to be a chat if possible. This assumes that I can pull that off without too much expense.

Couple of other things...

First, we're hoping to do additional projects to our normal VBS routine. We've been doing that in previous years too but we're trying to do even more.

Second, the idea of having other churches join us is new. So for now I'm not sure how we'd do it exactly. Here's what I'm thinking though...

If you wanted to bring less than 5 people, we might just say come as part of our group. That means that you'd stay where we stay and function as a part of our group. You'd ride with us, eat with us and pretty much function as a team member.

However, if you brought a group of 5 or more, I'd say we'll partner with you but encourage you to act more independently--especially as it relates to transportation, food and lodging.

Of course, all of this is subject to change. I'd want to talk to you about your goals for your group and make sure we were on the same page and all. My goal is to get you to be as independent as possible as soon as possible. That said, some folks just want to play it safe the first trip. I'm game for considering both extremes.

So, if you want to talk more about it, let me know. But I'd suggest that if you're seriously considering this trip that you let your people know before Christmas. If you figure the cost of the trip at around $1,000, they might like to put this trip on their Christmas list if you know what I mean.

Oh, who can go? Youth can go but there are some limitations depending on their age, maturity and how many leaders you're bringing. Of course, it's not limited to youth either. I think it's a better trip when our youth go but then their great youth so I'm biased. But if you just bring adults, that's certainly fine. I'd say keep it at high school or above. If you want to take middle schoolers I'd limit it to exceptional middle schoolers over 13. That's been our policy to date and it has served us well.

So perhaps we'll be Skyp-ing sooner than later...

In the category of getting you info asap, the dates for Vacation Bible School (VBS) in Curacao next summer are July 2-6, 2012. While this isn't all that we'll do, it's the ministry we build our trip around since it's such a major part of the trip for us.

We would send our team down the Friday or Saturday before and return the Saturday or Sunday afterwards.

Also, there is a small team going down the week before. You can choose to travel with either group. Obviously, your lodging and food costs would be higher if you chose to stay 2 weeks.

We're taking 13 youth and adults to Curacao the 2nd week of July this summer!

Some will go down a week early and help with pre-week preparations.

Emma and Cesar will be in Hawaii that week enjoying a much-needed and well-deserved vacation for free! We look forward to seeing them again.

Prayer request for Caroline in Curacao

Dear Friends,

I am looking for another house to move into and to continue my ministry. It has been confirmed since we were in prayer this month for personal revival, that we have come to the conclusion together with my pastor, Calvin Varlack, that my ministry philosophy is different than Silvia’s. That means we are going separate our ways. I am more of a risk taker and open house kind of ministry and Silvia is more cautious and has certain rules which I respect. Lud will continue to be my right hand in ministry. Silvia is a quiet servant and has a very generous heart. I thank God for allowing us four years together under one roof. God has reminded me of the vision He has shown me a few years ago, and that I should pray again until He provides. That is for a place to live and minister out of. Apart from something small to call “home” to have three outside bedrooms with bathrooms to sleep a total of 24. On the same property a place with a roof for shade and rain where about 30 can sit and eat together, and also where we can have teaching session, workshops, and meetings. It will be a place where groups from abroad can come and stay to do short term mission work. Please join me in prayer that God will provide the strength and financial means to move again. Also pray for a place to call home while waiting on the piece of land for the vision to become reality. I appreciate your prayers and support. May we all continue to SEE the glory of God’s amazing grace! May you also experience a personal revival and see Him at work in and through you in a new and fresh way. Ephesians 3:16-21

FYI - I checked the American Airlines site last night for current quote on next Summer and the CHS to CUR round trip price is $776. Based on that, it appears there is no need to be concerned about booking early for next year. It could well be that we may want to consider a "priceline" offer for the specific flights and if that does not work, we know what to expect by going direct through AA.

So if you're considering going next summer, start saving your airfare + $250. That should cover your trip costs no matter where you're coming from.

Also, assuming we go, we'll be in Curacao for 2 weeks. The window we're looking at is the week of July 4th plus either the week before or the week after. You don't have to go for 2 weeks to be a part of this mission trip.

Back in 2011?

Well, we're back a few weeks from another great trip to Curacao. We helped with over 400 kids and teens for a week and saw God work in and through us. Wow. What a great week!

And we want to go back...

While I was there I was determined to figure out if God was finished with us there in Curacao and was to move us on or if He had more in mind. It appears He has much more in mind for us!

Kali and I tentatively planned out 2 weeks worth of ministry and mission projects in addition to our normal projects in Fuik. (VBS, ladies workshops, teens, etc.) So we are excited about the possibilities.

My belief is that God wants to see His church work together to show the love of Christ in practical ways. So I'm praying that several churches will send teams down with us the first week, second week or both.

Well, our team of 7 is packing and buying our last minute snacks in anticipation of a great week in Curacao. We will fly out of Charleston (itinerary below) early Fri. morning ready to serve our Curacao brothers and sisters in Christ. What a treat to be able to do this!

Fashion Show in the works

Hey!
These are the things in my mind:

I think it would be good to "speak" to the girls on Tuesday or Wednesday of the week, rather than on the first day, so that they have time to get acclimated to us and trust us.

My idea is to do most of the things we do in an experiential way: 1st because that is a powerful way to learn that sticks with a person more than lecture; 2nd because of the particular age goup; 3rd because we don't speak their language (so it would be neat to do something that doesn't rely completely on verbal communication--something they can observe and experience and sort out on their own--with a little help). I was thinking of a series of experiences which each have a purpose--with all purposes being coherent to a common theme. Each experience is followed by a debriefing time wich encourages the girls to process what they felt but also gives them truths to work with. The debriefing time is the verbal time and has a lot to do with the leader hearing and responding to the girls' thoughts and experiences, and directing them toward the purpose of the experience. This would a good job not for us to do, but for someone who can speak their language (literally!). If Shanira is going to be there again, she would be a prime candidate for this role, she is quick on her feet and good with the girls.

Theme: They are a creation of a loving Creator
   1) they were created by God out of his love
   2) they have a purpose
   a--what is the purpose of their life?
   to be in relationship with God (loving relationship)
   b--what is the purpose of their sexuality (who are they)?
   made in the image of God--as women they exude certain of his attributes that males do not
   modesty
   purity

(rough draft--please help)

Modest fashion show--bring tons of modest, but pretty and colorful clothes. allow them to pick out outfits and model them, showing them that beauty doesn't require one to show off their body. they can take the clothes home with them. teach them about what their sexuality was given to them for--not to show off their body for every man, but to glorify God and to give it as a gift to one man. they are beautiful--they display the image of God's beauty (the hebrew word describing women as beautiful is used otherwise only to reference God's own glory!), what is the healthy way to do that?

one idea still in process is about connecting the experience of trying on all of these new clothes to God's offer to make us new creations when we "put on" the new self. This may be a good way to introduce salvation. But I want to be careful to focus on God's gift of salvation and grace, rather than fast-forwarding to the results of salvation--change, which may take a while in a person. any ideas?

Photo shoot--continuation of the modesty idea. Teach them that there is modesty in body language and attitude as well as dress. Show them modest body language. take pictures of them and let print copies of their pictures to give to them later in the week.

These are my most thorough ideas, but I want to think of more. I want to think of some experiences that will help them to understand the love of God and how they are each unique creations--precious to him. I will continute to think about that, and you all can too.

I am reading some books right now about modesty and sexuality. As I read I can share what I learn.

I am still in Canada and will be back in Curacao next Tuesday. My car still needs to get that wire to be placed to turn on my airconditioning. If you can that would be great to have done. You remember my switch is broken.

Hey to you!

There are 14 of us going to Curaçao, June 26-July 3. We are going the week ahead of VBS to set up another shelter roof on the side of the Eman house near the kitchen. We will also work with Emma to get things ready.

We will do a project for Caroline van Romondt, setting up her counseling area under a tree, using paving stones and gravel.

We will also lead a revival at El-Bethel, and English-speaking Evangelical Alliance Church.

We have a family of four (husband, wife, teenage daughter and third-grade daughter); my wife; and nine men other than the husband/dad already mentioned. The men include me, two teenage boys, a 23 year old single guy, and the rest. I feel very good about the group. We got round-trip Delta tickets for $549 each.

Just checked Delta again. The cheapest ticket [$508.40] requires an overnight stay in Atlanta. The best option returning on one day is priced at $640 per person.

Outbound flight is: DL # 1334 Dep CHS 7:00AM on July 3 and DL # 679 that arrives CUR 2:10pm [all these are Saturday only]

Return Flight is : DL # 678 Dep CUR 3:10pm and DL # 1634 that arrives CHS 10:55AM the following day. [508]

The other is: DL # 678 Dep CUR 3:10pm and DL # 1538 that arrives CHS 10:48pm the same day [640]

There are plenty of seats on each flight for the $508 ticket. I did not check the seat availability on DL # 1538, but would assume there is pretty good availability there as well.

I have not seen any cheaper price that these options. My experience in ATL airport is that you can get a double at the airport location of Drury Inn and Suites for $105 including tax. There is a Ruby Tuesday within a block and a fast food [McBurger] right by that. So even with an overnight and meal, the cheaper flight does offer some savings vs the return to Charleston on # 1538.

Seems to me the issue is now one of whether the events in Haiti have any bearing on whether any from GCF go to Curacao. What we know is that VBS is going to happen. It seems we owe Cesar and Emma an answer soon regarding how many and who are prepared to commit to VBS. All we have told them to date is that some of us to intend to be there.

My understanding as of this moment is that those considering going to VBS are the Hundleys [2] and the Joslins [3]. Given the abudance of seats available, there should be no risk associated with adding others over the next several weeks. Once the Hundleys and Joslins make a final commitment one way or another, it would be timely to reach out to see if there are others interested in going unless there is some clear reason to limit the group.

I will send a separate message to Curacao to get whatever information they can offer re VBS and any Haiti support efforts they have or contemplate that may have influence on our decision.

Thank you for all your efforts, Darien, to gather more resources for Fuik. Local church in Fuik to partner with us? Wow, that is a huge step. Who knows what God has in store for us. One thing I know, He is faithful and watches over us. How else can we survive?

Another group goes to Curacao this summer

From a July 27th email on the group we hooked up with others in Curacao last minute:

I just ran home for a bite and back again to Fuik to attend to the other team from NC. Thanks soooo much for making such a huge difference in our group that went to SC. Finally, yesterday at church we could hear their testimony which was way to short a time for all of them. They are so revived and with such enthusiasm. There favorite words are "more than awesome" when asked about their trip. Doris, your name was mentioned several times. You and Gene are the kind of people I and many others love to be with.... you love the Lord and it shows all the time.

Please pray for me and the team that finally arrived yesterday and some today...Also pray that we can be a blessing to them! I believe they need encouragement and will learn a lot. The leader, Bob, pray for him... I thank God I have learned so much from you so that I can teach others now...I know you will pray and I know God will do the transforming work in all of us.

p.s. also pray for my financial situation, my August support is coming to a low and I do not get a cheque until mid September.

May God continue to bless you all you do and may His love fill you and His joy be your strength to keep going ... and coming to Curacao :)

Friday wrap-up

We had a very pleasant farewell gathering at the home of Gloria (our meal provider). She and her two brothers have a "garden" that is used to host parties right at their house over near the big ball park and public pool.

Friday ended up being their biggest day. The consensus was that the kids were pretty hyper too. Cesar and Emma send their love to you and all at GCF that made this possible. Cesar took the time to note the obstacles they faced over the past 3 months and said he and Emma were convinced the VBS would not have worked without our team and specifically the dedication of our vans to the full day schedule. During the week, he had noted that we were cutting off 60 to 90 minutes off their afternoon chores in returning children. I did not realize that Emma was routinely driving in prior years in addition to Cesar.

Friday update

A rain shower mid morning caused quite a stir. 5 minutes of rain can scatter folks pretty well. It forced a move of the teen boys from a ball field that got too wet to continue, so an hour after we dropped them west of Santa Rosa, we went back to move them to Caracas Bai.

Closing ceremony is in progress now. We likely start our return to home runs for the kids in 15 minutes or so and we have a group meeting after dinner tonight at 7pm in Bonam.

We will leave all our cash here. With the work we have done on Cesar's van and the boys house being a bit extra, it will use all but I feel good about what we have been able to do.

Thursday update

Today went well. Several of the crew picked up trash early this morning in the ditch we cleaned out last year. Laurel seems to have been a hit with some of the older ladies in the FUIK neighborhood by making brownies for them today as part of a presentation to them.

Chika prepared lunch once again for the group. It consisted of (you now have Doris talking as Gene missed this lunch) chicken stew, white rice, peas and carrots and glass cake. Glass cake in a jello-o type mixture and we were very honored because it is not the norm for them to serve dessert. Chika also served more of her homemade juices. She is trying to encourage the use of native plants in cooking and healing in Curacao. They were interesting flavors. The youth have been wonderful about trying new things and very nice manners have been used to thank our hostess. This is still Doris talking...we met a missionary, Joan, who is now living in Fike and has offered her home for our next visit. She said she could take 20 if we did not mind waiting on bathroom time. She lives on Emma's block and is a teacher now. Her husband is very kind and they have 4 grown children. Joan is about to be a Grand Ma for the first time so we had a lot of celebrating and thanking God for our children, it is just a joy to be here. Now back to Gene...

Allan Murphy took his group to the beach near the old quarantine building this afternoon around 2 pm. Our youth were invited, so they and a couple of adults went with them. The remainder of our group joined the advance guard just as the Alabama group was heading back to the Pearl. The evening was capped off with fine dining at McDonald's along Ring Road. Everybody ate outside. Especially for those that still have their not completely dry swim attire on underneath, the place felt like it was freezing. The persistent Curacao breeze was a great improvement to indoor dining there. Most of us ate on the edge of their very large outdoor playground. At the end, we even congregated in one corner of the area to have a brief devotional. Arrival time at the houses was around 9 pm and we are in those early stages of clean up where you try to get the obvious things in order now since we know Friday night will really be compressed. Saturday morning will be a 4:30 wake-up which is only an hour earlier than we have been observing, but still early enough that we do not want to have to do all the clean up on Friday night.

VBS may end about an hour early tomorrow and we will come back to the house for dinner. We have been told not to eat dessert and we are requested to meet our hosts at 7 pm at a location to be revealed tomorrow.

There are far too many stories to relay here and some will be new to me since the driving we have been doing keeps Steve, Brian and myself away from the action quite a bit. What I do know is that the group here is highly appreciative of the support they have received this year. The numbers remained high today. Another of those rough measures I use to gauge attendance is how many van trips it takes to move folks. The youth were out at Caracas Bai today and it took 8 trips to get them to FUIK. Two of those were Cesar's large van.

I am going to say goodbye for now.

Brian had to change shocks on Cesars van yesterday. One broke Weds afternoon about two hours after they changed the U joints. We have paid for both of those, so what we saved in a couple of places is now gone, which I view as a good thing.

Tuesday & Wednesday

Wow! A busy day both days, but probably give the edge to Wednesday in the ranking.

We were told the group would peak in numbers on Wednesday and it sure looked that way. There may be an official count, but I do not have that tonight. What I do know is that one thing they track is how many meals they prepare. Teen boys get double and the youngest children get 1/2 portions, so the number prepared works out to a good approximation of the total of VBS participants and workers. Today, our kitchen staff rep (Doris) said 360 meals were prepared. There may be as many as 50 workers, so using that as a starting point, it would say there were over 300 children and teens.

Steve Dean and I spent almost all day driving. We each put 230 miles on each of our vehicles. Now that is not a big deal in SC, but in Curacao, it means you did not do much other than drive. The mileage we logged today was all in the mostly neighborhood setting where the combination of traffic, rough roads and two rush hours, makes that about all the miles you can expect in one day. We started at 7AM with pick up of children and some staff and ended a few minutes after 6pm. There was a period of about one hour with no travel during the morning.

Today was a chance for Brian to do some work on Cesar's van. It needed universal joints and they needed to pull the drive shaft. After only 4 trips to the auto parts store, they had the right parts and the van was running for the afternoon delivery of children and workers to their homes. It will be nice to have that one back on the road all day for these next two days. Not only did he work on Cesar's van during the day, Brian stayed through supper to do some work on Ilse's car. It needs more than he can do on this trip, but it looks like we can help them save money by purchasing the parts in SC and shipping them back in the luggage of the Curacao team when they leave SC.

The entire team on the ground in FUIK continues to be everywhere doing whatever is needed. The Alabama team worked the full morning at VBS (which included some very helpful driving) and then went to Antillean Baptist Church for painting. Our entire youth contingent went along and they worked the job together. Except for a bucket handle failure, the paint went on the walls as intended.

All had dinner here tonight provided by Gloria. She will prepare a meal for us Friday and after that we will meet the group from FUIK for a casual evening. Thursday evening, we still have some hopes we may improve the logistics to a point where we can be done by 5pm and let the group cool off in the Caribbean before sunset. Just in case some may not appreciate how hard our group has worked, we did get less than 2 hours at the beach Tuesday evening. So the Thursday foray will be the third outing and all three will total a max of 6 hours for the week. A bit less for the group that left the beach Sunday afternoon to help get things ready at FUIK. While there have been the adjustments that always come with a trip like this, the beach time is not a huge surprise to the group because we talked from last fall that we were going to volunteer to help in the afternoons which necessarily cut way back on the beach opportunities. What is really cool is that this large a number were willing to make the investment of themselves and their money to come be hot, tired and at times frustrated in spite of the limited recreational time. All those discomforts can melt away when you get a moment to see just how much our presence means to those leaders here. It also reminds us that we are here in some measure to model for adults and not just help kids in VBS. By our presence and work, there are youth and parents that are seeing how much commitment is needed to make something like this happen and that they can lead and they can make a difference by committing themselves.

We made our devotional tonight a reading of I Corinthians, 13th chapter. My prayer is that I am always aware that no amount of work or sacrifice has value unless it is given in an attitude of submission to God.

We could not get an Internet connection last night, so this is just to let all know that all are well and you can be sure our combined groups are doing a lot of work. Today, SC and AL join in the afternoon to paint the inside of a church.

What a neat opportunity is falling into your laps!

I just finished talking to a good friend Kurt Wright. Long story short, a youth mission trip planned for Honduras has likely fallen through due to the political unrest there. Because of the great amount of time and money already spent, they are looking for an alternate site to serve.

It's a youth mission team of around 10. Curacao came up because a sister of one of the youth (Nancy Wright, currently in Curacao with our mission team at Cesar & Emma's) knew about our work there and thought it would be a good destination.

So my question to all receiving this in Curacao is: Are there projects in Curacao that this group could come work this summer over about a week that you all already know about? In other words, do you think you could pull together enough local ministry work to justify this team coming there?

Caroline, I'm looking to you to coordinate this from down there and see what potential there is. This would need to happen quickly as once summer is over here these youth will have to go back to school and the window of opportunity will close.

Cesar & Emma, will there be some follow-up work after this week that you need help with?

Herman, do you have projects that this team could help you with? They can work with children or they can paint or do manual labor.

Calvin, I know you're coming this way, but you know what's going on down there. What can you suggest? Can they help your church do some local outreach in the coming weeks? We could coordinate a face to face for you and their youth pastor to plan out a trip while you are here in SC next week (Jul 11-20). They could even come down and participate with you group next week in our local missions effort here to help them get to know you all. Give this some thought.

Faris, what projects do you know about?

Allan, you being there now should be able to shed some light on this once you're back (Jul 11) in the states.

I mentioned Siloam children's hospice, Awana club at Eman's (Cesar and Emma) on Sun., Siloam kid's ministry on Wed. to Kurt. There are other opportunities there as well.

2nd Day update

A busy day in Fuik! It would be so nice to say it all went without a hitch, but you know better. The remote entry would not work one of the vans this morning for about 30 minutes, so we were delayed getting everyone to Fuik since that system disables the vehicle if the alarm is not properly disabled. It eventually worked and we decided just to lock that one only when needed just in case it wants to act up again.

Our group made 3 pick up runs this morning and 5 return runs this afternoon. Cesar said we cut off over an hour on their evening run compared to last year by our vans being available for this extra duty. I know many back home would be amazed at what some homes look like here. It really reminds us that in the US, what we often would consider poverty, looks very much like middle class here. Brian and I both had some insights on this last year, but after we drove routes today, each of commented that we returned children to houses we would have otherwise guessed were uninhabited.

The Summerville and Alabama groups worked VBS this morning. After lunch, some from the Alabama group went out to arrange painting work for Tuesday and Wednesday. They will do a project on their own Tuesday afternoon and roughly 1/2 of our group will join them for a project on Wednesday afternoon. The rest of the Alabama group worked the afternoon athletic program along with our entire team. Folks shifted into cleanup while the vans were on the road for the return runs.

Our group met at the house we stayed in last year and had supper (outside) together. Outside until dark is good because of the steady breeze that really works for you if you are outside. Following supper we talked about the day and where people saw God working and called out needs we recognized that needed to be lifted up. Probably the greatest concern is youth where we see many already with hardened hearts. As we broke up we noticed that the full moon had become visible and just reminded us again of the testaments to God's creation he has placed all around us.

Even with the extended schedule we have adopted our group is up for a couple of trips to the beach. We will not have any high points for intrepid divers to leap off because we are resolved that we will finish Tuesday and Thursday afternoons by leaving Fuik and going straight to Caracas Bay. It looks great and it is close, so we expect we will be there not later than 6pm and picnic on the beach and enjoy the water that is cooler than it is now in South Carolina. The only downside is that we have an hour less sunlight than back home.

Tuesday and Thursday, a neighbor of the Emans (Chika) is going to cook some traditional island dishes for our group. Adventurous eaters can hardly wait. Not all our group fit that category.

From the scene that was unfolding at about 8AM today, order and control might have seemed an ambitious hope. I am not sure of the exact moment, but was aware some time mid-morning that it was running really well. Outside, there were over 200 today and the expectation is that the total participating will increase on both, Tuesday and Wednesday. Inside, the kitchen was a constant buzz of activity with preparation of snacks, drink coolers and lunch. The vans were on the road during VBS as well, supporting the boys at Caracas Bai and the girls at a meeting place in Fuik about two miles from the VBS. Nathan was mentoring his peers on helping kids have fun on the play court and Linda was seeing at least one "patient" per hour. She reports the most effective remedy to restore happiness was an ice pack. It may have been that the holding and attention were contributing a lot as well.

We close with the report that all are well and that we see many opportunities to be used for God's glory. Tomorrow night we will make an attempt to send some photos.

It was a rainy arrival in Curacao on Friday night. It was noisy one too. There were several from VBS and the full drum unit was there. When they cranked it up, everyone in the airport took notice!

All were into the houses and ready for lights out by 11:30 that night.

Saturday was shopping and beach day. At least that was the plan. We got into Punda (downtown) at 9:30 and left at 11:30. There were frequent rain showers all morning, but none hit us again until late that night. When we left Punda, we went to the beach at Porto Mari. Shortly after arrival, we got a call that Emma had realized the preparation work for VBS needed some quick help to make sure all was ready in time. 1/2 of the group volunteered to head back and the others stayed at the beach. While our group was only there for 3 hours that afternoon, several key things got completed and only a few tasks remained for Sunday afternoon.

Saturday night, the Summerville Team (always includes Nan Wright) met up with the team led by Allan Murphy of North Shelby Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. The agenda was dinner and Caroline had set us up at Maracas Restaurant which sits on a hillside looking across the Saint Anna Bai (bay), which is the channel that connects the ocean to the protected harbor in Willemstad. The location was perfect for a view of the Punda section of downtown we had visited in the morning. It would have been a great view if that Venezuelan frigate had not shown up and moored right beside our location. The food was great, the company was delightful and the devotional provided by Archie was a timely reminder that every person is a joy of God and precious to him. It was the perfect reminder of why we reach out in our communities and around the world as we planned our Sunday worship and prepared ourselves for the week to come.

There was another important thing we learned from Cesar Saturday afternoon and that was he would appreciate it if our team could use our two vans to pick up children before the start of VBS. Our answer was YES and it just means we shift our schedule a bit. Where our original plan was to be at Fuik shortly before 8 each morning, now we will be there a bit before 7.

Sunday was a starting time similar to what we observe at the Senior Center. Gene went with Allan Murpy (he preached in Papiamentu) and two others from North Shelby to a baptist church. Laurel, Josh, Jeremy and Nathan went with others from North Shelby to a baptist church where Archie preached in Spanish. The rest of the Summerville Team attended Abundante Gracia where Cali preached (Papiamentu) and Caroline Von Romondt arranged translation for those. All three groups met at Pizza Hut and finished up with observations on each of the services. The Summerville Team went straight to Fuik after lunch and helped with final preparations. The North Shelby Team arrived for the parade at 4pm. (all times are approximate in Curacao.....like it or not)

The drum core made the most noise, but all the walkers were busy handing out flyers, balloons and candy as the procession made its way around for 45 minutes.

After parade there was music and a service led by Cali at the Eman's on the ball court and there were a few more preparations ongoing during that time as well. Actually, two of our team (both named Josh) were recruited by Caroline to help with cooking and our supper was hamburgers and hot dogs at Caroline's house. We brought some home for the North Shelby Team that had gone to an evening service at a nearby church and they just stopped by our house about 9:30pm to pick up what we had for them. Our house has grown quiet as all have decided it is wise to get some sleep before the 5:30 wake up arrives.

Please pray for VBS at Fuik. There are many children eager to attend and open to God's love. We remind ourselves we are here to support those who love Jesus and we look forward to being whatever the situation demands so all can come to accept him.

Boarding in Miami

They are boarding now (4:30 pm) in Miami for Curacao. They've been traveling 12.5 hrs so far today. Nancy from RDU met up with them with no troubles so all 15 are together now. They should arrive in Curacao at Hato International Airport about 9 pm. They should be in the same time zone as we are since it's Daylight Saving Time.

Grace Family,

Emma Eman lost her 91 year old dad Sat. night. Cesar and Emma host the VBS we helped with last year.

Cesar emailed me asking us to pray for her.

Hi Darien,

On Saturday evening at 6.:20 Emma’s father died at the age of 91.

The funeral will be on July 1^st.

Pray for us, since this causes a lot of stress on the preparations for the VBS.

While it is assumed that she'll mourn his loss (she had a good relationship) that grief will include a lot of stress. That stress is very hard on Emma who battles a number of chronic illnesses that flare up or get worse when she is under a lot of stress.

This year they are pulling all the stops as they celebrate their 10th VBS in their neighborhood. Since she's in charge of the overall VBS project for hundreds of children, this will bring an extra challenge to her and all involved (including our team going Fri.).

Please lift her up right now!

I am going to give you incomplete information [at the end of this message]on your request to assign people to the various groups. I have not had the opportunity to get input from the team, so there will certainly be some changes. Our next opportunity to speak with all will be June 28. I will copy the assignments section of this email to our team and ask that anyone who may have a strong preference for something let me know. Also, Allan Murphy's team of 8 is planning to work VBS as well, so there are certain to be some changes as we sort out the assignments for all. As I look at the total number available, it certainly looks like there will be enough of us to help staff all groups

Help me be sure I understand about the Gospel Light material. At one time, we anticipated it would ship to our home and that our team would bring it down in our baggage. It seems you are getting it all direct via Fed Ex. If that is so, it is great. Just confirm if you would, so we know if we should be expecting something to arrive here that we should bring with us.

Doris reports that our ladies continue to work on planning for the meetings with the ladies group you will have. Laurel Sullivan and Jan Joslin are working that together. I believe they expect to have something they could send you on [or soon after] our June 28 meeting.

The only craft item that is planned as of this moment is a bracelet that would be a reminder for abstinence and fidelity. If you have other specific things you believe would be helpful, please feel free to notify Doris, Jan or Laurel.

We do have one person each from South Carolina and Alabama that is a nurse. You had previously mentioned being pleased about having a nurse. I would like to hear, what are your expectations of a nurse? For example....do you want the ability to call on one of these ladies, only as needed to attend for some problem, or do you believe you need someone dedicated only to the role of nurse while VBS is in session?

You mentioned that you will have some art projects for girls in the age range of 12 - 15. I will presume you are preparing the plan and materials for these projects. If this is not correct, please advise.

A young lady from Columbia, South Carolina has recently committed to join our team. She is Nancy [Nan] Wright and she worked your VBS 5? years ago as part of a team Darien brought from North Carolina. She is in school now in Columbia and learned of this team's plans recently when in communication with Darien. That means our group now is 15 persons.

How you can help: transportation

To support the Curacao missions, we need volunteers for three trips:

1. One additional van driver to depart not later than 4:00 AM on 3 July from Summerville to deliver GCF passengers to Savannah Airport no later than 6:00 AM. The van will be provided by Old Fort Baptist Church. Optionally, one scout car that will drive ahead of the van convoy and keep it advised of road conditions and be able to help in the event of a mechanical breakdown.

2. One additional van driver and a driver with truck suitable for pulling a trailer to pick up GCF and Curacao passengers at Savannah Airport and deliver them to Bonnie Dunes at about 10:30 PM on 11 July. We will be using the old church trailer.

3. One additional van driver to depart TBA from Summerville to deliver GCF passengers to Savannah Airport on 18 July. Optionally, one scout car that will drive ahead of the van convoy and keep it advised of road conditions and be able to help in the event of a mechanical breakdown.

What to Pack for Travel

Casual clothing sufficient for 11 days travel (9 for Curacao and 2 for Bonnie Doone). Shorts and T-shirts are fine. It is ok to wear things more than one day. Our housing does not assure any chance to launder anything other than what you might hand wash in a bathroom sink.

A cap or hat
PJ’s or suitable sleeping clothes for close quarters
Closed toe shoes (like sneakers) that protect you on rocky terrain and a concrete play court.
Bathing Suit (1 piece) and beach towel
Wash cloth and bath towel [if you bring your own shampoo and soap, make them small]
Normally equipped personal hygiene items in a travel kit [can be a good zip lock]
Hair dryer [for some]
Prescription medications [there will be a 1st aid kit for the group so you don’t need to take your own]
Sunscreen and insect repellent [especially if you have specific needs regarding either]
Bed sheets [assume double bed size] and your own pillow if you want it
Small flash light
Bible and small journal with pen
Airport entertainment [books, cards, etc.]
Your camera and batteries, along with a re-charger
Spending money [we talked about it, so you determine what is right for you…. $100 enough if you are frugal] Consider taking snacks you like, especially if it helps avoid those high airport prices.
Offering money for church service(s) on Sunday
Snorkel, mask, fins if you have them and want to avoid rental cost

Important considerations:

Last year 7 bags were 3 days late getting to Curacao, so be sure you are OK to go without what you pack in your checked bags.

Do most of your packing before July 2! There are stores in Curacao, but things will be more expensive and we do not have time built into the group schedule to accommodate trips to get “forgotten” items.

Most days the only air conditioning we will encounter will be in a vehicle….and, not always then. It is by no means awful, but it does help if you keep things simple.

Remove anything from your wallet/purse that you do not need in Curacao. It is just good travel practice in the event you lose it. The same goes for jewelry. REMEMBER: From the time we arrive at the Savannah airport and until we get on the vans there, heading to Boonie Doone, nobody should leave the group by themselves.

When in Savannah and Miami airports, keep your carry on bags with you or leave them with someone who is prepared to commit to stay with them while you go do whatever you need. If airport security deems your bag to be abandoned, they will be interested in keeping you, as well as your bag for a while and they will feel no obligation to make sure you catch your next flight.

Passport and insurance coverage cards should be with you at all times during travel to and from Curacao. These can be left in our host homes during the days on the island. We will lock the houses when we are gone. It is a good idea to make a copy of the passport (color) photo and signature pages and your insurance cards (black and white ok here) and keep those copies separate from your originals.

It is ok to take cell phones for use in the US. Unless you have a special plan, they will not work in Curacao and those plans are expensive. We will have limited access to email in Curacao at Cesar and Emma’s house and will use that if there is any urgent communication need from or to our group.

Transportation, baggage, etc

Linda Dean posed a question last week that we never got to and it is a good one that I believe we can address. That was about how those of up coming back from Curacao hook up with our cars to return from Bonnie Doone.

He is my take..... The vans from Miles Road go back to the church after they drop the group at Bonnie Doone so it is not an option to use those when we leave Bonnie Doone. I will suggest that those needing their transportation to return from Bonnie Doone arrange with someone from GCF that will be coming to Bonnie Doone on Sunday morning and have them bring your vehicle.

Another alternative is for a limited number of those who will need their vehicles to ride back to Summerville after the Sunday morning service with those who are not staying overnight. In this alternative, you can return later Sunday with your vehicle.....and its is just possible you may also have watered the plants on the porch, exchanged some dirty laundry for clean, etc....but you get the point.

So, think about what works for you and we can coordinate when we meet again.

Another good question, but this is one I have not yet been asked. When do we meet again? Lets plan on June 14. This will be back to our shorter format and will be at the senior center right after break down. The last chance to meet following a Sunday service will be June 28, so please pencil that in on your calendar also.

NO BAGGAGE CHARGES!

I said last Sunday that I thought you could check one bag free. The American Airlines web site shows that our fllights can check two bags with no charge. Bag weigtht is limited to 50 pounds and they will weigh them. The carry on bags that are so popular are weight limited to 40 pounds and remember, if you pack these so bulky that they will not fit in the overhead bins, the airline will then check this bag and if that makes it a "third" bag, you will be charged for it.

Our dashikis are in! We will bring them tomorrow and distribute. Please do make sure you try yours on soon. There is time to make any alterations or perhaps swap with someone if you are not pleased with the fit. There were a couple of extra large ones requested and all the others are a single size. Doris and I just tried on the same one and it works great for both of us, so it looks like there will not be an issue of them being too small for anyone.

YEA!!!! Contact has been made with Emma and we have the beginnings of a game plan.

Emma desires: Two separate group meetings (Tuesday and Thursday mornings) with the local ladies. These ladies are single Mom's with children by different father's. The topics she desires are self worth through Jesus and to have some fun with crafts, food, etc. She also believes the plan of salvation should be given. There will be someone to help with language issues. These meetings will be at her neighbors house. Just a reminder that is where Laurel was chased by the dinosaur last summer.

Emma also desires: Two separate classes for the female teens. A couple of topics she would like to have covered are God's plan of salvation, no sex until after marriage and sex only with your husband. Also, education in how to talk to God daily. Also, this needs to be fun with a craft if possible.

Emma said if we had hand outs and could get then to her she would translate them for the ladies.

Emma stressed what a treat to have outsiders visit and talk about Jesus. She says there are very few to no positive role models in the females lives in this area.

Gene will be covering this material on Sunday with the whole group I just wanted to give you ladies a "heads up" on specific desires Emma has for us.

Gene will also be showing you shirts that we need to wear during VBS. I found a site where we can purchase them for $10.00. They are of light weight fabric (they can be washed at night, hung out to dry and worn the next day). I priced fabric today at $6.99 a yard and could only find a pattern on line which was $7.50. Just one more thing to consider before Sunday, I think that decision will be left to the ladies.

We have two separate houses to stay in this year and the same lady will be cooking for us and she is aware we would like some input into the menu. I still do not want to know what I am eating.

Emma is struggling with her health but is excited about our coming to be with them on their 10Th Anniversary.

Upcoming Meeting

It will be time to get together again soon. Either of the last two weeks of May are the target for our next meeting. The Sunday before Memorial Day is the 24th and is the first option. The following Sunday, May 31 is the second. I will be asking this weekend which you prefer. Feel free to respond before that via email..

The format for the next meeting will be a bit different. We will bring in pizza and will set up for a bit longer meeting. We are going to set up in the room where the toddlers meet. The start time will be our same pattern of getting started when the breakdown is done. We will plan on 15-20 minutes to eat and then we may meet for up to one hour.

Why?

1 - There are some details that we need to share.

2 - We have some decisions we need to make for ourselves.

     The kinds of things we need to decide relate to a) how we set up our housing
                                   b) how we set up our first day on the island
                                   c) how we coordinate with the group from Alabama....they want to join us in VBS
                                   d) how we spend a long, long day in the Miami airport......we will bring some suggestions.

REMINDERS:

A) Complete ( or start ) writing your personal testimony. We may have the opportunity to share these on our Sunday as we share worship with local congregations.

B) Prepare a devotional.....( or start ).

C) Remember to cull any orange from your wardrobe......blue and gold is very cool in the eyes of the islanders.

D) Pray. If uncertain of what to offer up, pray for Emma and Cesar Emman, our hosts. Pray for one another.....pray for the children we will be serving.....pray for the volunteers we will be working with (and who typically each of us will be supporting.......they are the boss).

Lets get ready to do Curacao! What a blessing we have to be able to go serve and grow by serving.

I am so much looking forward to this time we plan to share together. Don't hesitate to call if there is anything I can do for you to help you get ready.

Total going up to 25!

With 17 going from Grace and 8 (maybe 9) going from North Shelby BC, excitement is building for our first joint-mission trip to Curacao.

In addition, there is the possibility with our increased numbers for additional projects to be taken on. Now we're looking at possibly painting the inside of a local church.

The most exciting part of all of this to me is that 2 churches are looking to work together instead of compete. This is an answer to Jesus' prayer in John 17 that his disciples would work together in Christ. Please join me in praying that this actually happens.

Trip Update from SC

I am checking in and thought it best to copy all.

What has changed since we last exchanged any significant correspondence is that Allen Murphy will have a smaller group and has suggested we combine his and the Summerville group wherever it makes sense. We are happy to pool ourselves and offer what we can where we can be the most good.

This may have an impact on housing. The price of the "Pearl" is more than most in our group would like to pay and we do have a preference for staying together. We do recognize the difficulty increases as group size increases, so if very economical opportunities emerge that require some flexibility, we are open to any recommendations. As the team lead for Summerville group, I do want to have opportunity to have some time together each day even if sleeping accommodations are not all at one site.

With 17 from Summerville and 6 from North Shelby, I certainly remain open to consider some type of project in addition to VBS, but VBS remains the #1 priority and if all are needed for that, count on us all.

In recent conversation with the Summerville group, all were in agreement that we would like to offer whatever may be helpful in the afternoons at Cesar and Emma's or in the neighborhood. We might try to arrange that for Monday through Thursday and this could be something that does not require the entire group each afternoon. If that were the case, this could allow everybody a couple of afternoons for beach time or something similar.

Since our Summerville group will arrive Friday evening the 3rd, it is likely we would make our downtown visit Saturday the 4th since the departure on the 11th is so early.

I would like to pose a question here about that Saturday night, July 4. Does it make sense to try to arrange something that would bring together our group with the group that will be traveling to Summerville from Curacao?

You suggested that "Skype" is a program that allows us to talk over the Internet. We will look into that this week and get set up here very soon. I would like to arrange for us to have a few conversations starting later this month to assist us in our planning.

Really looking forward to being with all at VBS this Summer.

Hello Doris and Gene!

Thank you for your note. And thank you for offering to help in any way you can. Right now we are waiting for the OK from Holland for the vacation plan budget. In the meantime we are trying to get big foam boards to make the animals to decorate the yard. Also we should order the material from Gospel Light soon. That will be around next week Monday or Tuesday. Once we have the material, I will email you a list of things that we can do way in advance, for instance, for the arts and craft. It would be great if you and yours can take care of that for the five days for all age groups - if possible, that is. What do you think.

You may also put a program together for the ladies if you will. If there are hand outs you may send them early on to be translated, a recipe, songs for more or less a 2 hour program. We are thinking of buying material of African print to make dashikis for the leaders. Is it a good idea for us to mail you the material for your group so you can sew it over there? Is that easier than for you to send the measurements of your group so we can sew them over here? What do you think. What we will also do is make some orders from the Gospel Light catalogue. May we use your address for the orders? You can bring the stuff down when you're coming. Is that a good idea? Is there anyone in your group good at painting faces? We will have a face painting day: lions, zebra's, monkeys, etc.

Thanks for all the pictures, Gene. Doesn't Doris look like a movie star? We are not so well organized yet to have pictures of our leaders. Lud (the lady coordinating our volunteers in Iglesia Grasia Abundante) is breathing down my neck about recruiting people. But we are so busy for the next two weeks. As soon as March is here, we will start concentrating on VBS. We will be having a workshop with all the rules, age groups and their leaders, list with specific tasks, etc. and I will send you a translated copy. Would you also like a list with basic papiamentu words so you can talk a little bit with the kids? I can ask my daughter Lisa to do that with the pronunciation in phonics.

USS Farragut Makes a Difference in Curacao By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman (SW) Shanika L. Futrell, Destroyer Squadron 40 CURACAO, Netherlands Antilles (NNS) -- The Guided-missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99) along with Commander Destroyer Squadron (COMDESRON) 40 Sailors participated in a community relations (COMREL) project Sept. 2 in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. During the COMREL, 20 volunteers spent the day interacting with children through a soccer game, painting the school walls, and providing some landscaping at "Skol Dr. Nelly Winkel" School. The principal of Skol Dr. Nelly Winkel, Soraida Mardenborough, was amazed with the outcome of the project. "We are very happy that you guys came out here to help us," said Mardenborough. "Our school really needs a lot of repairs, and we didn't expect [the Sailors] to pull the weeds and cut the grass. I was shocked and amazed by the extra things [the Sailors] were doing for the school and we are all pleased with the outcome." The COMREL didn't end with the volunteers refurbishing and landscaping; Farragut also joined efforts with Project Handclasp (PH) to provide toys and hygiene products for the Siloam Foundation of Brother Herman Gijsbers Orphanage children. Project Handclasp is an official U.S. Navy program that coordinates transportation and delivery of humanitarian, educational and goodwill materials on naval vessels and distribution by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel on behalf of American citizens to people in need. "I enjoyed participating in PH simply because seeing what brother Herman and his wife are doing for these terminally ill children was inspiring and knowing that I could be of assistance was gratifying," said Chief Culinary Specialist (SW) Wendell Heyward. "This one project alone has inspired me to help out more people in need when I can." Farragut donated two pallets of supplies Sept. 1 to Siloam Foundation of Brother Herman Gijsbers Orphanage. The two pallets included hygiene items and toys for the children. The toys included skateboards, roller blades, helmets and more. The hygiene pallet included items such as mouthwash, bath soap and baby bath wash. "COMRELs and Project Handclasp are a way to reach out to different nations to show that we do care and we are willing to lend that helping hand in their time of need," said COMDESRON 40 Chaplain Andre Trofort. "Participating in events like this always boosts my moral knowing that by just providing a little bit of my time and elbow grease I can make a difference in the lives of many (emphasis mine)," said Aerographer's Mate Airman Apprentice Steven Bell. The COMREL and Project Handclasp were held in support of Partnership of the Americas 2008 (POA 08) throughout South America, Central America and the Caribbean. Hurricane Omar impacts Curacao

Hurricane Omar has wreaked havoc on Curacao. Curacao, not in "Hurricane alley" usually avoids the severe tropical weather common in the region. But here is an account from our very own Cesar:

Hi Gene,
Yes we also had the beginning of what is now hurricane "OMAR".
Many beaches and structures near the west and south coasts of Curaçao were destroyed or heavily damaged by up to 8 meter (24ft) high waves.
The waves were even destroying the week-end houses ontop of the cliffs at Westpoint.
The beach where the older boys went for the VBS is completely destroyed.
Even the parking area is damaged.
At Knip-beach (Westpoint) all the roofs, benches and trees are "gone".

More than 80 trees were reported down island-wide.

Our home only had rainwater coming in from the South-West.
The two tents are destroyed.
For the rest all is OK.
Our neighbourhood had a power outage on Tuesday, Oct 14, from 10:00 am till the next morning Wednesday 4:00 a.m.

Just this past week we had company from Colombia (8 persons).
They came to minister at the Evangelical Church nearby, but wanted to remain (stay) at one place altogether.
So, as we always do, we said "Yes why not".
The office is their dormitory.

The Lord is good, and we have not words to explain it.
Emma and Carol are doing well.

Next Meeting

We did meet last Sunday and have taken some decisions all need to know.

Air travel is yet to be fully settled, but we are now planning to depart on Friday, July 3, 2009 . Uncertain whether we depart from Charleston. We are checking our options out of Charlotte and Savannah. Cost still seems to be in the vicinity of $800. We expect to have updated quotes incorporating the July 3 departure by the middle of next week and we will make a decision not later than Oct. 5  (see note below about the next team meeting).

Still on airline tickets.....we will have to make commitments for tickets soon. We will expect any who are planning to go to Curacao to declare so not later than Oct. 5.   Not later than October 10 , every person going must deposit $100.00. That is a fee required at time of booking if we use an agency. If we book direct with an airline, the full amount is due at time of booking. If that becomes necessary, we will ask those that can to pay their full amount. For any that cannot, we will set up the ability to pay for your ticket over some months. If we use this process, all should expect to make regular payments toward tickets and complete paying for their full ticket cost not later than May 1, 2009 . We would have to determine the ability of the church to absorb the up front cash demand this option could require. Please recognize that I can not today, assure this option is available and the extent that payment terms that would have to apply to make it work.

The estimated cash obligation in addition to the airline ticket remains at $250.00. That covers housing, most meals and transportation. The key variable is housing. We will likely be later this year or early next before that is resolved.   May 1, 2009 will be the final due date for that to be paid to GCF.

Linda Dean is investigating our options for providing some form of medical/health service. The laws of Curacao may prevent "clinics" for medical treatment, but she has ideas of other possibilities.

Brian Joslin has been asked to communicate directly with Cesar Eman to plan how our team could provide a "mechanics" ministry to those who lead VBS and hopefully, into the nearby community as well.

Megan Joslin has volunteered to take the lead in helping the team develop language skills for Papiamentu. She is assembling some materials and tools for this purpose. We will ask her to conduct some group training and practice over these coming months.

Any interested in working with any of these on their area of focus are encouraged to contact them. It is certain we will identify other avenues of service we want to pursue and as a consequence, we will need to spread around the responsibility to lead each of these.

note: As you can see, we are jumping into the necessary work to be ready for next Summer. We are going to need the talents and active engagement of all now as well as next July. It really is important that everyone who intends to go to Curacao be prepared to commit to meet as a group with some frequency. Preparation is going to take time and our commitment to do the advance work will have a great impact on the witness we can provide when we are on the island.

The next meeting of the group is set for October 5 at the Senior Center. The entire church is going to have lunch there immediately following the service to kick off the 40 Days of Community.   Every  Curacao team member should plan to stay following the lunch for a one hour meeting.

2009 trip coming together...

Hey Everyone from Grace and beyond...

The details are solidifying for our mission trip back to Curacao July 4-11, 2009 . Currently we have about 18 signed up to go back from Grace. That's up from last year and includes several that went last year. It was that good of a trip, apparently!

We are hoping to add some new projects to our VBS support efforts. We're evenramping up our leadership for VBS taking on the afternoons where there are some real gaps. That said, we hope to add a medical component, a baseball camp, and some light construction or renovation to the mix. That will depend in large measure on the number of other groups we have join us that week. Of course on every trip we want to scope out more projects and partnerships for our on-going partnership with the churches of Curacao.

If you think you or you're church might like to bring a team, we can help you coordinate the trip.

Your end would be get your plane ticket, bring additional cash to use for lodging, food, etc. that we'd arrange (about $250/each) and then we'd connect you with the ministry projects that fit you and your group. We can either keep your group together or let your people pick and choose from the options we have. Right now, we have VBS. But the more people that come, the more choices we can offer..

Steven Gay is already discussing bringing his youth group down from Buis Creek, NC. It's time to start serious discussions with those you need to, if this is something you feel led to do.

Caution: If you're wanting to lead a group from your church, please check with your church leadership first. The last thing I want to do is upset your church leaders by undermining their plans for your church family.

I'm not recruiting for a trip. I'm making this opportunity available people I know and trust. But if your leadership is not on board, either don't come or come individually as part of our group. I'd add that if you're church is planning a mission trip for next summer, make sure you consider it first. That would be cool for your church family.

Rebuilding a Church?

It has been a while since we have communicated, but when you were here in Curacao, you asked to watch for mission work. Well, a tornado destroyed one of the Christian Missionary Alliance Churches two weeks ago. The roof, electrical, hymnals, bibles, everything was destroyed. They are going to need help. Our church is taking a special offering for them, but I don't think they will be ready to construct anything until next year. Maybe there is something you would be able to help with? Just thought I would pass this along.

Decision Time for '09

It's hard to believe we already need to decide what to do in 2009--but we do! Other than do nothing (not acceptable), we have 3 basic choices before us:

1. Go back to Curacao and help celebrate Cesar and Emma's 10th anniversary doing VBS in Fuik. This would happen July 5-10. (although we'd might go down earlier)

Not only would we help with VBS but hopefully we'd get to do some other projects as well. We'd like to make a greater effort in partnering with others from Curacao and the US to provide more helpers and opportunities to help in Curacao.

The approximate cost would be your plane ticket + $250. Last check it was $800 to fly from Charleston to Curacao.

2. Host the youth group from IGA (Iglasia Gracia Abundante). They want to come to the US and do a mission trip in the SC low country!

The dates would be July 11-20 and we'd be their host. They'd bring about 20 youth and 4 adults. We'd start with a joint weekend youth retreat and then the rest of the week we'd do ministry projects together.

3. Do both 1. & 2. There already is a lot of interest in going back. Gene and Doris Hundley are willing to lead this trip as well. But there are a lot of people who would love to help host that can't afford to go. This would be a great excuse to ramp up our ministry efforts locally.

Speaking of locally, our overall mission strategy is to take Acts 1:8 and rotate our emphasis. Jesus tells us to go locally, nationally & internationally in Acts 1:8. He tells us to go cross-culturally both locally and beyond. So our strategy is to go internationally 1 summer, nationally the next summer and then locally the next. Here's how it looks for us:

2006: Mission: Gulfport. We helped rebuild houses damaged or destroyed by hurricane Katrina that summer. This was our national effort.

2007: Mission: Curacao. We helped with VBS in Curacao.

2008: Mission: SC Low country. We want to touch lives in a number of venues in the SC low country. By hosting the team from Curacao, we'll not only have more help, we'll have youth and adults greatly motivated to impact our community and momentum to keep us engaged long after they have returned home.

Curacao: What's next?

Here are a few of my (Darien) thoughts as I think back over our trip and forward in anticipation of 2009:

Fuik VBS: As Doris has suggested, If Cesar & Emma continue running an afternoon program, then we could help a great deal by programming & leading afternoon sessions. This is a huge undertaking and we'd need to beef up our numbers to around 25 to do this well. But with support from other US churches, we could get there.

Another option is to fully take on some of the morning stations. Maybe we could do the arts and crafts, say, since that requires less language to prepare. We can also do games.

Fuik Community Center: Cesar already has the land picked out and someone who is ready to buy it. If that is true, someone has to build it.

Siloam--Hospice: Support them by doing physical improvements as needed such as painting, repair and simple construction. If they will let us, help with the care of the children.

Siloam: Children's programs on Wed and Sundays. This is similar to VBS in Fuik but with different leaders and in a different neighborhood. We can learn from them and help transfer lessons to Fuik and vica versa.

Siloam-lodging for us?: Can be another home base for groups if the facilities aren't being used. They aren't A/C but they'd be cheaper.

Medical Clinic: I believe Siloam is working on a medical clinic too. (Fuik needs one too) We could help staff that one or two weeks. We could also go into the homes (with help) and do field work. This would require those with medical expertise (ie. nurses, doctors). I think we would find nurses and doctors not currently going anywhere who'd catch the vision and join us in this expanding the work in the kingdom.

Promoting Abstinence: This is working in Africa where AIDS and teen pregnancies were/are out of control. Where this is being done it is having a dramatic positive impact. They are having the same issues in Curacao. We can do some creative education on both ends of the island.

Projects/Partnership through Abundante Grace Church: There is a lot of potential here. If they come to the states, that will be a great step towards a long-term partnership.

Projects/Partnership through Curacao Christian Fellowship: There is potential here as well. They are already supporting both Fuik and Siloam financially. The next step for them is to empower their people to serve "hands-on" in those places. We can help them by giving them an excuse to help us as we serve there. This is a win-win. This could result in them working throughout the year with these and others giving us a broader base of support as well as potentially more projects. I like their heart and willingness to get involved. Due to their contacts, they are also a great source of potential low-cost housing (especially on the central & north parts of the island)

T-Shirts: If I had it to do over, I'd do t-shirts. Not only do they help build group unity, they offer a visible testimony when traveling and they are a regular reminder after the trip of what we did and give us opportunities to share our stories again. Not bad for $15 a shirt. www.uthstuph.com is my favorite source.

Trip Notebook: This was the first mission trip I've done without doing a trip notebook. Packed full of devotions, puzzles, games, Curacao FAQs, customs, papiamentu, schedule for the week, contact numbers and more, it was a handy tool for each group. That said, I thought we were able to cover the deficiencies in other ways and didn't miss the prep time it requires. I did miss having it though.

Prayer Bands: Normally, I've given out some kind of prayer arm bands to remind people back home to pray for a specific name when we go. (Usually at least 2 arm bands per person going) I think our people did a great job of praying so it's certainly not a have-to. But it gives us another way to remind people to pray for us frequently.

Mechanic work: I think it would be cool if we could do free auto repair for single moms. We would provide free labor and they could pay for the parts. We might could do it right in the auto parts store parking lot. We could also supplement the cost for parts with some of the funds we collect, if we want to. While the owner is waiting we could talk about why we're doing this and possibly share the gospel along with a cool drink and snack while they wait under an umbrella in a couple of chairs. We'd need a translator but that wouldn't be too hard to find.

Servant Evangelism: Another way to just serve people is to do acts of kindness. Free auto repair is one example of this. We could also set up at a gas station and offer clean car windows for free. There are many other examples of things we could do. There are books with tons of ideas on this. We just need to make sure the ideas work culturally. This would also increase our interaction with those who'd never come to church or VBS. And, it has minimal preparation other than purchasing the supplies you need. I'd be willing to lead a team or two to do this if I went back.

Going back: I want to continue to expand our influence and impact there. That's my passion and for that to happen, I feel like I'm best qualified to do that right now. I also want to see at least 1 more church come down the same week (or following) to do ministry there as well. So, I'm still considering going, though I am not sure yet.

Also, if I do servant evangelism here as part of our hosting, I can do the same things there as well. And their kids will have done it here already. How cool would it be for them to take back what they learned and do it in their own country. Isn't that what we want our group to do?

I'm pumped about what God is doing here! I'm very excited about your leadership as well, Gene & Doris. I feel that without more leaders with a passion for His mission, this is doomed to fail. Fortunately, we're joining the missio dei--so there will be no shortage of resources! Thanks for your leadership on this.

From here: I suggest we begin meeting once a month to discuss the next steps for both hosting and going. (If you're up for this, let's pick a date and make a short list of people to invite) We'll gradually grow our leadership team as well so that we share the load (love) as we serve together. I'd love to see each home group take on a piece of the hosting and a piece of the going. That truly would be church-wide!

Affection is Rare

Two-parent homes are rare in Curacao. So are affectionate parents. The single parent works hard all day and then comes home to energetic children who are starving for attention from the one they love most. We saw this a lot in how clinging some children were. Much of our ministry was simply holding children during VBS.

Pray for the family in Curacao. And then let your mind drift back to America where the family is under attack and single parent homes are on the rise. Who suffers? Our children.

Join us in praying about our (& your) role in Curacao in 2009. Here are some possibilities...

1. Go back to Curacao spring or summer of 2009. Take a team to do VBS and a team to work at Siloam (Children's hospice, medical clinic, etc.).

2. Help GCF host the youth group from Abundant Grace Church (Curacao) as they do a mission trip here in Charleston. They would bring about 24 youth and adults in July for 10 days.

3. Both 1. & 2.

Whether you want to go as part of our team or help host there's something for everyone here. We're open to people from other churches joining us on this potential trip in '09. But it's time to start planning now. We'll be making a firm decision soon.

Curacao: Day 7

As I type we're serving lunch and our part of VBS '08 comes to a close. We will say goodbye to all the workers tonight at the post VBS party but we say goodbye to the children now. We'll then head to our 6th beach in 7 days (I know, but you're at work so we might as well go for you).

Before VBS this morning part of our group decided to come out 45 minutes early to pick up trash along the streets in the neighborhood. One stretch was almost solid beer bottles. Before we were done with that stretch, the owner was out digging weeds and now it all looks as good as new! What a great testimony for Cesar's neighbors!

Brian finally got to do some mechanical work. He did a break job for someone at Cesar's request.

I had a good meeting with Pastor Calvin. He wants to bring his youth on a mission trip to Charleston next July! And our group wants to come back next summer. As you can see we have some praying to do.

Speaking of praying, please continue to pray for our safety, our logistics as we travel, good health and continued good spirits.

Curacao-Day 6

Sorry no pictures yet (next week) but we've taken a lot! (Over 600!) We'll be showing a lot of these Sunday morning fresh (in a manner of speaking) back from our trip. (We arrive at Savannah Airport at 10:15 PM Sat.)

VBS is going very well! Our group is learning how to communicate in Papiamentu & Spanish. (We're avoiding the Dutch. Too difficult) I learned that that national color of the Dutch is orange. I'm not sure what that says...

We have also worked on cleaning up the neighborhood-literally. We picked up bags of garbage along a major ditch in the neighborhood. This we hope will win favor for Cesar and Emma with their neighbors across the street.

We've no serious injuries and nothing lost.

The last few nights have not been as good for us sleep-wise. The regular breeze hasn't been at night making the mosquitoes worse. (They've been the worst I've seen in all my trips here) Add to that a lot zealous dogs in our neighborhood and it's hard to sleep at times. That said, we're getting to bed reasonably early and aren't having to get up to early. So we're ready for bed but we're not falling asleep during the day. Everyone is getting along well too.

Gene and I finally got to ride in the infamous "Van" God provided them through GCF and others. Cesar likes the 350 under the hood and that it's not a diesel. (Gas is about the same price here as in the US)

Doris did not 1 morning but 2 mornings where she led her group. First time (Tue) it was 30 young ladies. Today (Thurs) it was 7 mothers. She loved this morning the most.

We've been to a different beach every day so far. Some cost while others are free. We aren't getting there until mid to late afternoon so we're missing most of the sun. We've gotten to snorkel the last two days. It's like swimming in an aquarium!

Tonight we'll eat out seafood. (our second time eating out) We'll be downtown on the water at the Grill King. You might be able to find it online. It's in the part of town called Punda (means Point).

10 of us had a blast yesterday at the beach riding the giant banana. It's 5 at a time on a giant inflatable banana pulled by a boat. Some stayed on more than others...

This afternoon we'll travel to the north side of the island to take in yet another postcard beach. We'll go to both cliffs and see what happens...then if we have time we'll visit boca tabla and the pistol (limestone formations) and then head back to go out to dinner. Hopefully we'll get to walk around downtown a little too.

Everyone is having a good time and has been a pleasure to travel with. Your prayers are making a tremendous difference! Please continue to pray for God to reveal his next projects for us to introduce us to the people he wants us to work through.

Day 3 in Curacao

We landed about 7:35 PM at Curacao International Aiport ready to take on the world. And God continued answering prayer.

One of our prayer requests was to get through customs without having to pay any import taxes for the 400ish Hygiene Kits we brought. Well they waved us through without searching 1 bag! Okay, so that's not exactly accurate. Without searching any of our bags that made it...

So 19 of our 26 bags arrived with us. That's passing in most schools so we'll go with it. Gene picked up the remaining bags. We don't know if they were searched or not but they didn't charge us anything.

Sunday we took in worship services at 2 different churches (one on the beach). We then went to the beach ourselves for an hour and then participated in the VBS parade designed to draw a crowd. We had an 8 piece drum line and 5 piece brass band and they were good! Altogether we probably had 75 people in the parade. It was a blast.

The first day of VBS is usually the lightest in VBS. We had about 120 preschool through grade school children. Probably another 40 youth plus about 25 workers plus our 13. Cesar said the second day usually doubles in number. Yikes!

Today included Gene rescuing our luggage, Doris playing sports, Darien in the kitchen, Nathan leading games, and a lot of us feeling pretty useless because of the language barrier (part of the process).

Our house is wonderful and so far the mosquitos haven't been bad. The temperature has been only in the low 90s with a strong breeze all the time.

We're learning lots of new words and cultural tidbits.

Oh, and we had pizza hut Curacao-style for Sunday lunch.

Continue to pray for us. Here's how:

* Leaders of VBS-wisdom, spiritual discernment, and bearing much fruit.
* That our group will serve humbly and faithfully as unto the Lord.

So, the final week has started. How are things over there? Everyone packed and ready to head South? We are praying for a safe trip for you all, no delays and no lost luggage.

Here we really don't know how we are ever going to finish on time. By working shifts, I guess. Carol & crew are painting non stop, Cindy (our second daughter) is sewing the flags and Lisa is finishing the banner. The cleaning crew is coming in on Thursday, Cesar & boys have a list of 35 things to finish.... etc. etc. No rest for the weary.

Gene told us you will bring the medals. Thank you!

About the uniforms, you guys decide, OK?

1. Yes, the 0-4 go around all the stations. Some of them have to be carried, so tell Samantha to start practicing by carrying potato sacks or rice bags (3 or 4 at a time).

2. The ladies' meeting is indeed better in the morning. Maybe the moms can be picked up together with the kids, attend the opening program and then leave around 9. I'll work on that.

3. Nathan will be working with John Andrew, one of our youth - I think he's 15. Yes, we have chosen the games, but it would be great if Nathan or any of you can come up with some games. There will be around 25 kids in each group. Nathan/you will have to sit with John Andrew and/or with me on Sunday so we can prepare the material he will need.

4. Our group will wear long sports pants, but if your group would like to wear shorts that's OK, as long as it is not too short (bermuda size?)

5. Yes, the mornig program is from 8 to 12.30. Of course you will eat lunch with us. It will be bread and something like potato salad, hot dog, hamburgers.

6. The party will be on Friday night, then, instead of Saturday

7. Our church has two services: one from 8 to 9.30 and one from 10 to 11.30. So you can first go to Faris (starts at 9) and after that our church for the second service (no problem if you are half an hour late).

8. I will send you the Bible text and song as soon as possible

9. No, I did not give you a specific task, as you will be everywhere at the same time, helping Cesar and arranging future work/activities with us/Siloam.

A Prayer

This prayer was sent to me in response to a prayer request I had to Steve Scott in Arizona. Here it is for all of us:

Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for Darien and the church body you have given him to shepherd. Thank you for the good works, you have prepared beforehand for them to do (Ephesians 2:10). You know the heart of each person in his church body and their commitment to You. I pray You will remove the obstacles that may be hindering some of them from even going on the trip and work out all the details so they can be a part of Your work. I pray for Your Spirit to go on before hand and that You will melt the hearts of the people and prepare them for being in your presence. Father work out all the details, guide them through the obstacles and in the end, allow them to complete the work. Your word tells us that when their is no vision, the people perish. Give the church body a vision and burden for the people of Curacao. In Jesus Name, amen

Adding: snack size zip locks - need 300 (to put q-tips in)

will be advertising that powder needs to be small size - otherwise takes up most of the gallon size bag

We've created 30 of our 300 needed hygiene health kits so far for our summer mission trip to Curacao.

We're also encouraging other churches and individuals not associated with Grace to get in on the act. Partner with us to reach the island of Curacao!

We'll need help later assembling them but right now we're in collection mode. Here's what we need:

Wash cloths
deodorant/antiperspirant
toothpaste
toothbrushes
baby powder/talcum powder
feminine napkins (individually packaged so that we can break up each box as needed)
soap
disposable razors for men and women

You can drop these at the Curacao display on Sunday mornings or by Gene & Doris Hundley's house during the week. Email us if you have questions.
